Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
